Amanda Simone, Director of The Home School UK, speaks about her own education journey, different home education styles to consider and the legal requirements for homeschooling in the UK with Gillian (a London-based secondary school teacher) from The New Roots Community Group.
The basic 'need to know' when considering homeschooling in the UK is: 'it's your choice' and we're here to help!
The UK Government gives you the right, and the guidance, to teach your child at home either full or part-time. This is called home education, ‘elective home education’ or ‘home schooling/ homeschooling’; it's all the same for the most part.
If your child is already enrolled at a school it's advisable to tell the school if you plan to deregister them and educate them at home. Remember, you don't need to educate your child literally in your home and you can find out more about the different types of homeschooling, including world schooling and in our video above. The school must accept if you’re taking your child out completely. They can refuse if you want to send your child to school some of the time.
If your child is attending school because of a school attendance order, you must get permission from your local council before you can educate them at home.
